Wedding Cake/Desserts

Weddings

Almost everyone enjoys sweets, whether it’s cake, cookies, brownies, pies, or the other yummy options we have. Wedding cakes are a tradition that’s been around for centuries. The style and quality of wedding cakes has grown so much over that time that there are many more options available now! You have the freedom to make your cake personal and work with a local baker who you can trust to make your wedding cake perfect.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a bakery to work with and then deciding on all of the details. I recently got to talk to Emily, the owner and baker of Tampa Bay Cake Company. She’s been making cakes and desserts for about 5 years and even started a Tampa Bay baker group on Facebook for other bakers to connect. A lot of bakers work by themselves in their homes and Emily even has a dedicated area in her home for just her baking.

Here are some tips Emily gave for brides about choosing a bakery and details for your cake:

  • Fondant has changed a lot recently and tastes much better than it used to so if you’re looking for more options of designs for your cake, that’s definitely the way to go. Buttercream is the other option, which tastes great but just has fewer options for decorating. Emily said, “Don’t be scared of fondant.”

  • Look at the baker’s past work on their website and social media. Then take the time to read reviews to make sure they can make the cake you want and they are trustworthy in the community.

  • For the brides who want a smaller cake just to cut and get pictures with, there’s an option to do a dessert bar for the rest of your guests. You can have a variety of sweets that your guests will love! This also makes it beneficial for anyone concerned about individual desserts.

  • Two of the most popular flavors Emily makes are earl grey/lavender and pink champagne.

  • Don’t be afraid to try something new! There are so many different options available and this is a fun chance for you and your guests to try something new.

Here are some questions you can ask when you are looking for more information on a bakery:

  • “What type of ingredients do you use?” They should be high quality ingredients.

  • “Can you make sugar flowers?” Sugar flowers are 100% food safe and recommended to use over real flowers. Fake flowers are not recommended because you don’t know how clean or safe they are to put on your cake.

  • “What are your preparations and experience in delivering a cake?” Delivering your wedding cake is a process so your baker should know how to preserve the cake best in this Florida weather and what to do in the worst case scenario.

Emily at Tampa Bay Cake Company does cake tastings if you’re interested in seeing what she offers. She has 3 different packages and the cost of the tasting goes towards the cost of your cake, which is an added bonus!
